Special Post By Publicist R. J. Garis

One of the clients I am most proud to have had the honor of representing is Nichelle Nichols from the Star Trek TV series and films ...  In 1966 Dr. Martin Luther King went to visit Nichelle who was then playing Lt. Uhura on Star Trek. It was the height of the civil rights movement, Malcolm X had been assassinated, yet every week, Americans watched a black woman on television. She wasn't playing a background role, but a lieutenant, one of the leaders on a Starship. However, after Season 1, Nichols wanted to quit the show to go back to Broadway - but Dr. King convinced her otherwise and she stayed. Nichelle told Dr. King she wished she could be marching out there alongside him. King replied, 'No, no, no,  you don't understand. We don't need you to march. You are marching. You are reflecting what we are fighting for.'
